How Much Longer?

How Much Longer?

"Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation."

Impatience is part of every child's emotional "DNA." What parent, while on a family road trip, hasn't been asked multiple times, "How much longer?" Unfortunately, impatience can often turn to skepticism in adulthood--like when skeptics ask, "How much longer until Jesus returns? I thought you said He was coming back to earth."

If people were asking that question in the first century (and they were; see 2 Peter 3:4), how much more cynically do they sometimes ask it after an additional 1,900 years? How should we respond when people question the fact of the Second Coming of Christ? When the prophets predicted His first coming (Micah 5:2), it was hundreds of years before He appeared. But He did appear. And since the same prophets predicted His Second Coming (Zechariah 14:4), we have no reason not to take them at their word, regardless of the passing of time.

Jesus' own words are our reason for certainty in the face of skepticism: "Let not your heart be troubled...I will come again" (John 14:1-3). Be certain today of His return one day.

The subject of the second coming of Christ has never been popular to any but the true believer.
