A Lecture on the Natural Sciences

A Lecture on the Natural Sciences

Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said..., "Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth?"
Job 38:1, 4

Job 38:1-8

Poor Job. He wrestled for days with crises and questions, and his friends had provided no relief. "Miserable comforters are you all," he muttered. But in Job 38, the Lord's voice finally broke through as God appeared to him in a whirlwind. Instead of answering Job's questions or explaining his suffering, the Lord took him on a tour of the sciences. The lessons began with cosmology, then moved on to oceanography, astronomy, and ended up with zoology. Reading Job 38-42 is like attending a series of breathtaking presentations in the natural sciences and ending up at the zoo. "Who provides food for the raven?" asked God. "Do you know the time when the wild mountain goats bear young?"

God doesn't explain all our problems, but He always points us to His power and glory. His creation literally surrounds us--on this globe, in the atmosphere, throughout the universe. "The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork" (Psalm 19:1).

We have seen that the Son of God created the world for this very end, to communicate Himself in an image of His own excellency.
Jonathan Edwards
