What Is Prayer?

What Is Prayer?

Bless the LORD, O my soul; and all that is within me, bless His holy name!
Psalm 103:1

The nineteenth-century evangelist, D. L. Moody, once addressed a group of children in Edinburgh, Scotland. He began with a simple question: "What is prayer?" To his surprise, one little boy responded loudly and clearly: "Prayer is an offering up of our desires unto God for things agreeable to His will, in the name of Christ, with confession of our sins and thankful acknowledgement of His mercies."

The evangelist was delighted. "Thank God, my boy," he said, "that you were born in Scotland." The boy was well-versed in the Westminster Shorter Catechism.

One old book about prayer suggests that true praying has only two steps: God's glory and God's grace. We begin by recognizing God's glory in worship and thanksgiving, and we avail ourselves of His grace through confession and petition. When we worship Him in prayer, we have the opportunity of offering ourselves and our desires up to Him, asking for those blessings that are agreeable to Him, and accepting them with gratitude. Where there is prayer, there is power; and where there is worship, there is hope.

All that true prayer seeks is God Himself, for with Him we get all we need.
