PATIENCE AND FORTITUDE

PATIENCE AND FORTITUDE                                  Friday - October 15, 2010

“And so after waiting patiently, Abraham received what was promised.” – Hebrews 6:15

For almost one hundred years, two marble lions have guarded the entrance of the New York Public Library.
Called “New York’s most lovable public sculpture” they were completed in May 1911 by sculptor Edward Clark Potter. The lions have witnessed countless parades and celebrations. They are the trademarks of the Library, represented in its logo, and featured at major occasions.
The nicknames of the lions changed over the decades. The current nicknames are Patience and Fortitude. Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia gave the statutes their names. The mayor used to conclude his colorful radio broadcasts with the words "Patience and Fortitude" to give solace and strength to his listeners, while acknowledging the hard times they faced during the Great Depression. He felt that Patience and Fortitude were the qualities New Yorkers would need to survive the economic hard times. These names have stood the test of time: Patience still guards the south side of the Library's steps and Fortitude sits unwaveringly to the north.

The Lord desires that we develop the characteristics of patience and fortitude in our life. Today in prayer, confess any impatience you may have and patiently wait on Jesus.

“There is no patience equal to the patience of God.” – Oswald Chambers

God’s Word: “Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” – Colossians 3:12
