THE GIFT OF SELF-CONTROL Friday - August 6, 2010

THE GIFT OF SELF-CONTROL Friday - August 6, 2010

“Rather he must be hospitable, one who loves what is good, who is self-controlled, upright, holy and disciplined.” – Titus 1:8

In 2006, Julie Westcott was diagnosed with cancer. Her co-worker and friend, Mike Sheehy wanted to do something about it. He decided to be a runner and raise funds for cancer research.
On May 30, 2010, Sheehy began his quest to break the world record for the highest mileage run in a single week. Previous to this attempt, the record stood at 350.2 miles – an average of over 50 miles every day!
For the first five days, Sheeny ran a total of 63.64 miles each day. The equivalent of running a marathon in the morning, a marathon in the afternoon, and 12 more miles in the evening. He broke the record on Saturday and finished the day with a total of 381.84 miles run in six days.
On Sunday, June 6, Sheehy ran the San Diego Marathon and finished with a total of 408.04 miles in 7 days. He also raised over $42,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

When we are self-controlled, we can do great things and bring glory to Jesus Christ. Today in prayer, give your gifts, time and talents to the Lord and be self-control.

"The Spirit whom Christians have received is the Spirit of holiness, and nothing unholy can be tolerated in one whom he indwells: self-control is part of the fruit which his presence yields in a believer's life." - F.F. Bruce

God’s Word: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.” – Galatians 5:22-23
