DON’T BE A BUSYBODY Friday - July 30, 2010

DON’T BE A BUSYBODY Friday - July 30, 2010

“We hear that some among you are idle. They are not busy; they are busybodies.” – 2 Thessalonians 3:11

In 1914, Louella Parsons began writing the first gossip column in the United States. She soon became a favorite of newspaper owner William Randolph Hearst. Louella focused on Hollywood stars and soon she had six hundred newspapers carrying her column, with more than twenty-million readers. Her conclusions were considered the final word, and many in the movie industry feared her disfavor.
Louella’s gossip column damaged the careers of Orson Welles, Mae West, Charlie Chaplin and Ingrid Bergman. She also was vindictive of other writers and had several columnists fired because of her lies.
She wrote in her autobiography that she lied frequently and often made extraordinary accounts about herself. She wrote she was unbearable and caring “deeply and sincerely” about only herself.
When she died in 1972, few people attended her funeral.

Gossip is a sin that breaks relationships. Today in prayer, confess any sin of being a busybody and seek to have God honoring relationships.

“Busy souls have no time to be busybodies.” – Austin O’Malley

God’s Word: “Besides, they get into the habit of being idle and going about from house to house. And not only do they become idlers, but also gossips and busybodies, saying things they ought not to.” – 1 Timothy 5:13
