A Humble Spirit

A Humble Spirit

Better to be of a humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud.

In his book on humility, Andrew Murray wrote, "There is nothing so divine and heavenly as being the servant and helper to all. The faithful servant, who recognizes his position, finds a real pleasure in supplying the wants of the master or his guests."

Because we're infected with the blood disease of pride, it's easy to take offense when we encounter haughty friends. We live in a highly competitive society, and there are a thousand subtle little ways of signaling our self-importance. When others do the same, we inwardly resent it. Oh, what a tangled knot it becomes. Only the knife of true biblical humility can cut through it.

One of the best ways to practice Christlikeness is to start each day saying, "Who can I serve today? To whom can I minister?" Remember that Jesus Christ never ministered to a perfect person, for He was the only one of those in sight. He came to serve imperfect people like us; and He bids us do the same.

The humble man feels no jealousy or envy. He can praise God when others are preferred and blessed before Him.
Andrew Murray
